looks like a black Confederate being paid

As often times when looking for something other information is found. In this case it's John Brown listed as a colored chief cook in Company A of the 1st Battalion Georgia Sharp Shooters.

Unlike many CMSR's though John Brown appears as being paid. On page two at the bottom it stated "Colored man belonging to Durham." And Brown was enrolled on August 2, 1862 at Savannah, Georgia for three years and noted pay due from enlistment. Other records stated he was paid for his service but I don't know if his owner received the money or Brown did.

And on page four it stated he was dropped by a Major because of an illegal enlistment and stated on his January and February 1864 Company Muster Roll.

This is the first time I've ever run across a black Confederate as being paid for his service. He has eight pages of Compiled Military Service Records.
