Finding Confederate tombstones in your area

Using google enter U.S., Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1963

After 1963 those applying for a Confederate tombstone fell under the privacy act and are not accessible.

Just enter the name of the Cemetery only in the above site. This also serves as double checking for Confederate tombstones in your cemetery. If the Confederate tombstone was ordered prior to 1963 a lot of information can be gained by reading the application. If the Confederate tombstone is not in your cemetery then check with the local library in their cemetery books and see if you can find a reference as to the location of the grave. Using an obituary may also be useful. If you can't the tombstone you could use a bottle probe and go down about six to eight inches in an area you believe the tombstone once stood. Sometimes the tombstone just fell down and is now covered by a few inches of earth. Of course the size of the Cemetery can make your chore harder or easier.
