Battle Scarred Piano

I found an interesting article from June 1902 from the Simpson County News, Mississippi, about the presentation to the New Orleans Memorial Hall (Confederate) of a piano.
The A. Q. May family had the piano saved from the destruction of Jackson, Mississippi during the war and kept it in Simpson County, just South of the city. The piano had been saved earlier by the 5th Washington Artillery of Louisiana and they had kept it in the breastworks in the south of the city where the 5th Washington used to play tunes and sing songs while under siege. The May family had placed a large silver plate on the side of the instrument engraved with the history of the piano. The piano was presented to the Louisiana Historical Society. About a dozen of the old vets from the 5th Washington were there and had enough energy to gather round the piano and play and sing the old tunes from those days.
