In a sea of Confederate graves in Simpson County, I find this lone Union grave headstone.
It belongs to Andy J. Smith, Galvanized Yankee. Deserted the 7th Mississippi in February 1864 and promptly joined the 1st New Orleans (Union) in April 1864 for three years.
He later deserted the Union army in 1866 and disappeared. He was given a pardon for desertion in absence by the United States in 1884.
The Fold3 site shows his enlistment and pardon. This is the first enlistment document for the 1st New Orleans I have seen. It states they were only to be used in the defense of New Orleans... period.
