George W. Foster Co. D 43rd TN

For George Martin, George I'm having some computer issues and apparently mind issues. LOL It was not the 43rd Tennessee but rather the 42nd Tennessee Infantry that was at Port Hudson. One of the soldiers was George W. Foster. He is listed twice on fold 3 once as George W. Foster and once as G. W. Foster. The other soldier was David James Atkinson with Company D of the 42nd Tennessee. I have forgotten how he was listed on fold 3. Both soldiers had deserted at Port Hudson, Louisiana in March of 1863. And when taken prisoners had said they were deserters from the USS Essex. Much was learned from pension records at the NARA in DC. While at Fort Delaware they were listed as being captured at the Gettysburg Campaign; they were really captured in Madison County, Mississippi. When applying for a United States pension Atkinson had to explain what really happened.
