CSS Hunley Simulation Research

Great work has been done in the analysis of the effects of the CSS Hunley torpedo. Simulations by US Navy and universities have determined many things that were not known.

The blast effect that sunk the Housatonic was the secondary force wave bouncing off the sea bottom causing a water "jet" or plume that blew a giant hole in the ship. This same wave did not incapacitate the men of the Hunley but may have contributed to damaging a ballast tank pipe causing flooding ** but it is not confirmed yet.**

Other facts learned about the Hunley from this research.. The speed of the Hunley

"University of Michigan’s towing basin revealed that the vessel could cruise for long distances at slow speeds near 1-2 knots and could sprint for short distances at 3-4 knots."

The crew could not sit and turn the hand crank, they had to stand so their knees would clear the handles.
