Thomas J. Tiner, Musician, Company A, 40th Regiment Mississippi Vols., enlisted March 13,1872 at Oak Bowery, Jasper County, Miss. by R. K. Clayton for 3 years, captured September/Oct, 1862 at Iuka/Coritnth/Hatchie and paroled Oct. 13, 1862 at Corinth, recorded Absent on Parole on end of year 1862 muster roll, present at Jan/Feb. 1863 muster, absent without leave Aug. 23, 1863 through April, 1864, captured at Big Shanty on Skirmish line June 15, 1864, received at Military Prison, Louisville, Ky. June 21, discharged to Rock Island, Ill. prison June 22, received the 24th, enlisted in the U. S. Army for frontier service October 6, 1864, no further records
