Re: James Bray

Thanks Glenn and George. Upon conferring with Grady Howell and reading lots of history it is my opinion that James M. Bray's tombstone and information on the Civil War Database is incorrect. I remember the grandson saying that his grandfather who had been in the war had died a year after the Titanic went down putting the Confederates date of death about 1913.

I looked at the Mississippi Confederate pension records and did locate his widow's application for a pension after his death in 1913. It stated James M. Bray had been a member of Company B of the 9th Mississippi (with no regards to the specific branch) and that his Captain's name was Hill and the Colonel was Miller. Upon doing some research it was fairly easy to determine that the correct unit was Company B of the 9th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry as the commander was Colonel Miller and the Captain was Hill. Prior to service in the 9th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry he had served in the 17th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry (Sanders') and had enlisted post Shiloh in 1862 and his name was found at fold3 as being with this unit.

The grandson had said his grandfather was at the Battle of Shiloh and the 9th Regiment Mississippi Infantry was at Shiloh however his name is not listed as being in said unit at fold3. And his tombstone does say his correct unit was the 9th Regiment Mississippi Infantry.

However I put more stock into pensions records and Compiled Military Service Records than I do a tombstone and family lore, at least that is my opinion.

I too am a member of the Civil War Database and will let them know of my findings.
