I am a collector of fractional currency, which was only printed between 1862 and 1875. Few people know that such currency ever existed or how important it was in stabilizing the economy of the union. As the war proceeded almost all hard coinage was hoarded leaving normal commerce in shambles. For a time stamps were used, but this proved impractical. To solve this problem paper notes in fractional dollar denominations were introduced.
