I am not sure if they have got the funds yet. Captain Bates was not just a huge man. He was intelligent also, went to college and taught school before the war. He enlisted as a private in the 5th KY Infantry CSA and because of his courage rose to Captain. I know a lot of his descendants because my wife's family is from that area. Most of the men from company F of the 5th joined Ben Caudill's 10th Mounted Rifles at one time but Bates stayed with the Infantry...again maybe because of his size?
