Re: Confederate Cemetery -Ole Miss

J. D. I have some info, not much

E. H. Norton-- Born 1830 died before 1875 either in Texas or Shreveport, LA. depending on who you ask

621 Jared Norton 50 m Planter $600.00 SC
Tamsey 47 f SC
Mary P. 23 f SC
Elisha H. 21 m Laborer SC
Martha A. 19 f SC
Harriet E.L. 17 f SC
Kiziah T. 15 m SC
Lillian 13 f SC
John L. 11 m SC
Winny 9 f SC
William B. 7 m SC
Hester A. 5 f SC

I saw, but do not have the 1870 census for Jefferson Co. Miss. There is a Tamsey A. Norton in the household of E.H. Norton at that time. Tamsey is the name of Jared's wife. I checked all of the Confederate records I could find and the only E.H. Norton I could find served in the 4th Miss. Cav. as we had determined. No Elisha or E.H. Norton from South Carolina served in the Union Army. That indicates that the E.H. Norton in Jared's household either did not serve or he is the man in Mississippi.

The Elisha H in this household fits the profile of our grandfather, but I have no way to determine if this is the correct man or not. If we could locate a marriage record or marriage certificate for E.H. Norton, son of Jared, then we would have solid proof of our connection.

I also found a reference that E.H. Norton may have died in Shreveport, La. after 1875. I know he is not on the 1880 census and his last child, Charles, was born in 1871. At this time I have not been able to prove this death date or place. This could be entirely wrong since I have not viewed any source for the information. I do know I found a lot of wrong information including the fact E. H. Norton may have been married twice and had about 12 or 14 children. That is absolutely incorrect.

I did find one website that may hold several good leads, but no solid sources, to our family -- http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=flstiver10&id=I8185

Do you by any chance know if Elisha middle name was Hodge????

All of these clues indicate we may be after the right man but still we could be missing a same clue.

George
