Two Civil War Photograph mysteries

1) In the Brady-Handy photograph Collection there is a photograph of four men lying on the ground allegedly they are of CS dead at Matthews Hill, Virginia.

see

File:Confederate dead on Matthews Hill, Bull Run (i.e. Antietam) LCCN2012647848.jpg - Wikipedia

Although this is a CW photograph there is doubt as to the ID...

YEars ago Civil War Historian Will Frassanito Came across another Versian that shows the four men standing and in act of firing their rifles... {See Frassanito "Antietam" p. 31)

The possibily is strong that in fact there were posed photograhs probably taken early in the War

there is apparently a third related photograh allegedly taken of Yankee pickets cooking rations Dec 9, 1862 Near Fredericksburg Va

How about this theroy?

A photograph was taken pictures of the US Soldiers in the woods {training camp(?) Note in all three they are wearing greatcoats

1) Picture Number 1 showed them cooking rations

2] Picture Number 2 they were posed with their rifles

3] Picture Number 3 they were posed as dead men

B) the second mystery concerns an alexander Gardner photograph taken at Antietam Maryland in 1862

Known as "View on Battlefield of Antietam" print No 572

View on battle-field of Antietam (loc.gov)

The obvious question is where was it taken?

The nearest Ive ever come across to a possible location Although I have cever ome is a suggestion that possibly this taken on the D.R. Miller farm on the northern section of the battlefield I dont claim to be a professional historian I think this was actually taken on the southern part of the battlefield on Sherrick Farm in view of the

following facts:

Gardner took at least two photographs on the Sherrick farm.

571 showing two dead Confederates on the farm {place id confirmed by Frassanito in his book 249-252]

Antietam, Maryland. Battlefield near Sherrick's house where the 79th N.Y. Vols. fought after they crossed the creek. Group of dead Confederates (loc.gov)

598 showing the farm buildings

History in Photos: Civil War

In comparison the Miller Farm has a slight slope but no evidence of white picket fence

In comparison the Sherrick Farm is built against a hillside....and has a white picket fence!

The Sherrick Farm - Antietam National Battlefield (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)

Because of the very nature of Civil War Cameras...if they had the time a photographer would generaly have to stay in place while photographing a battelfield aftermath {For example see

Frassanito "Getterysburg a Journey in Time" pictures of Confederate dead lying in the Rose farm Woods")

Lastly one should always be careful of CW Battlefield oicturecaptions-sometimes they are correct..and yet for example

CS Dead near the Burnside Bridge

Dead Confederate soldiers, as they fell, on the west bank, near the bridge, on the left wing of our Army, at the Battle of Antietam (loc.gov)

Irish Brigade dead

Group of Irish brigade as they lay on the battlefield of Antietam, 19th Sept., 1862 (loc.gov)

In fact the truth is these are both pictures of Confederate dead taken near the Dunkard Church! They were identifed several years ago, See Military Images Magazine Volume XX Number 6 May-June 1999 pp.24-26
