Re: Ridgeville Location
In Response To: Ridgeville Location ()

It was probably Ridge Spring in Edgefield Dist., located about 28 miles east of Edgefield. It appears as "Ridge" on CW-era maps, and it was common to add "ville" to town names (eg., "Chesterville" for Chester, "Unionville" for Union, "Yorkville" for York).

Are you sure your g-uncle was in the 2d SC Infantry? So far as I know, John Marcellus STEEDMAN of Lexington Dist. commanded Co. K, 9th SC Infantry, and was later colonel of the 6th SC Infantry, but did not serve with the 2d SC Infantry.

Hope this helps.
