I think I can attest to the performance of these specific cannon. My family owned the plantation on the east bank of the Great Pee Dee, "Rose Hill", directly East of Cheraw. (The present bridge over the Pee Dee has its' eastern terminous on Rose Hill land.) Oral history from my family indicates Sherman's nasty bluecoats torched the plantation home and outbuildings. (they did miss the "summer home", a mile back in from the "vapors" of the swamp; it burned in 1956).

Who is to say that these fires were not caused by incendiary bombs launched by those Michigan brigands?
