I looked at that collection about 15 years ago. It was published verbatim in the Procceedings of the South Carolina Historical Society in two or three part, sometime in the early 1980's. I don't have my copy in front of me as I do this--strictly from memory, but Hinson was in the 7th S.C. Cavalry in Gary's Independent Cavalry Brigade, and if I recall correctly his diary carries him from the time that the unit went to Virginia in Apr-May 64, through the surrender at Appomattox, and even the trip back to S.C. after their parole. Hinson was from either Johns or James Island.
