In Response To: Col. Benjamin Allston ()

Dr. Smith,

Born in Charleston, Col. Benjamin Allston was the son of South Carolina Governor Robert Francis Withers Allston (1801-1864) and Adele Petigru. He was named for his grandfather. The family were large rice planters and slaveholders in the area around Georgetown, SC.

After the war he lived in Georgetown and Union, South Carolina, and also Austin, Texas.

There are many references to the family in a Georgetown District history. Included are a number of quotations from letters written by Col. Allston to family members before and after the war.

Much of the family, including Gov. Allston and Benjamin Allston (the father of RFW) are buried in the churchyard of St. George's Episcopal Church, Winyah, in Georgetown.

Was recently there looking for the grave of Col. Allston, but did not find him buried with the family. Do you happen to know where he died and was interred?

Thanks, Mark
