The 16th South Carolina was commonly called the Greenville Regiment, since all of its companies were raised in Greenville District (now County). I haven't checked the census data, but its a good bet he was living somewhere in Greenville at the time of his enlistment. As Fred saiud, the 16th S.C. web site is excellent.
