Re: HAMPTONS LEGION MOUNTED INFANTRY

Lee,

You are corect in your assement of the events in which I had written. I will add two more items for discussion.
Lewis Rectors letter dated June 4 1864 Richmond in which he starts a letter and says that lay in line four miles from the battle.(This I wouldn't think would be Richmond)
When he comes back apparently later he starts with No.2
and says"that on Thursday (which would have been 2 June)
that he saw the Hampton Legion ,6th S.C. and the 3rd S.C.
on review and commented on the number of people as you remember.
We know that the 6th were lightly engaged at Cold Harbor
and that in Thomas Chiles Bradley's dairy dated June 1,1864
that they left Richmond on the 31st May and were two miles from Mechansville. On 2 June they saddled up and went to Bottoms Bridge.
E.H Acker in the last part of his write articles which you've seen says that they got to Virgina and went to camp near
the city on the Charles City Road and when the command arrived the next day all horses were shod and the next A.M.
were in a little fight at Bottoms Bridge. Then he refers to the fight at Riddle's Shop.As far as a skirmish there it is confirmed from records of 15 Vermont Cav. and
5th U.S. Artillery on 3 June 1864.Having been in the Army myself I take the comment from the soldier who's first action was "guarding a strawberry patch while the 2nd Cold Harbor was going on" as he took it as a slight and foolish waste of his time while fighting was going on.
This postion for the Legion makes more sense as far a being four miles from battle and it would have been almost right behind Fitz Lee who was across the Chickahominy on the 2nd.Also we know the other Cavarly who was at Mattedequin Creek was ordered there by General Lee.

Who do you think L. Rector was referring to concerning the 3rd S.C. Do you want a picture of James for you future use?
