Re: Hampton's Legion Mounted Infantry

Hello,

When formed, this was one of those Confederate units that underwent the combined arms "legion" concept invented by the Roman Army.

Thus, it had an infantry battalion, a cavalry battalion and organic artillery batteries.

Hampton's Legion rarely, if ever, fought under this concept (nor did Cobb's GA Legion) and the component units were split off into regular Infantry and cavalry brigades.

It seems, based on posts here, that the infantry component was mounted in 1864, but for the first three years they were ground pounders.
