Billie:

I have a Thomas Graham, enlisted in Company G of Hampton Legion Infantry at Columbia (undoubtedly conscripted) present on the May-Oct 63 rolls, no rolls for the Legion from Nov 63 through August 1864; shown as AWOL on the Sep-Dec 64 rolls; no rolls for 1865; no record of parole shown. The Legion was mounted in April, 1864, and a number of these men transferred out, but IO cannot find a reference to him before his enlistment in the Legion, nor with any unit to which he may have transferred.

However, the Thomas Graham in the Legion is shown on the 1860 Census as residing in Horry District (County). Also enlisting in Company G on the same date are S. F. Graham, of Horry District, and P. J. Graham, of neighboring Williamsburg District. P. J. Graham furnished a substitute and was discharged in Jul 634; S. F. Graham is shown as present through Oct 63, and then there is no further record at all.

Buford is an unincorporated community in Lancaster County, about 100 miles nrothewest of Horry County. I wqould not think that someone from Lancaster would have migrated to Horry, but who knows? I give the names of the other two Grahams in the company -- all apparently conscripted at the same time -- to see if they jog any memory.

Thomas and S. F. were probably brothers; they lived in separate households on the 1860 Census, but near each other. S. F. was a substantial landowner, owing 513 acres, but only 13 of those were improved, the balance probably being in swamp or woodland. I suspect that P. J. was also a brother, living across the Pee Dee River in adoining Williamsburg District.

Because the names are so common, I have been unable to track them down after the end of the war.
