Re: The Holcombe Legion
In Response To: Holcombes Legion ()

I just saw your query and note that Mr. Wright mentioned my book, Wandering to Glory. No separate history of the HL has been written, but I have tried to give a pretty complete account.

Here is a little more information: The correct name of the unit is The Holcombe Legion. It was named for the governor's wife and not for its organizer (Peter Fayssoux Stevens, a recent Citadel superintendent) so the possessive should not be used. The HL trained around Charleston in early 1862, and it provided one of the four initial infantry regiments of Evans' Brigade which was formed in the summer. It was a very good fighting force and Stevens was the senior and best colonel in the brigade and often led it in battle during Lee's August-October 1862 campaign (after which he resigned) when Evans was leading a division.

The brigade, including the HL served again in the Charleston area from fall 1863 until April 1864 when the brigade went north to fight in eastern NC and around Petersburg. Lucky for the HL, it was guarding the railroad south of Petersburg and missed the Battle of the Crater.
