Patricia,
See also: Berry Benson's Civil War Book, Memoirs of a Confederate Scout and Sharpshooter, ed. by Susan Williams Benson, University of Georgia Press, Athens, 1962. Benson was from the 1st SC regiment but served in the battalion of sharpshooters from McGowan's SC brigade. Prior to the invasion of Pennsylvania in 1863, the sharpshooters were organized into a battalion under Capt. William Thompson Haskell, who was mortally wounded at Gettysburg on 2 July. On 1 July at Gettysburg, the battalion covered the right flank of the brigade as it advanced against Seminary Ridge. On 2 July the battalion charged upon Yankee skirmishers occupying Long Lane which ran southwest from the town, where Haskell received his fatal wound.
