The "Memory Rolls" (compiled by the State of SC with the assistance of survivors in the 1890s) list Pvt. Drayton O'Shields, age 36, of the Spartanburg District in Company A. Under "Remarks" is the note "Dead". It appears that the Spartanburg District supplied most of the men for Companies A, B, C, E, I, and K of the Holcombe Legion.

Since the Conscription Acts of April 1862 allowed men over 35 to resign, he could have been discharged for a minor illness.
