After falling back from Knoxville, and after the skirmishes around Bean's Station, Hood's old division went into winter quarters around Morristown, Tenn. about Christmas 1863. The Legion was detached on 21 Mar 64 to go, not to Virginia, but via Asheville to Greenville, S.C., where the men were sent home to obtain mounts and the units was converted to mounted infantry. During the winter there was considerable maneuvering and one engagement, at Dandridge, on 17 Jan, so it was not a sedentary time in winter quarters.
