I am in need of any help in identifing a South Carolina Uniform.

I have a copy of an old photograph of my GGgrandfather Alonzo Burton Hutto, from Lexington County, SC. A.B. Hutto, age 18, joined Co. "K" of Edward's 13th SC Inf. at Camp Johnson on September 3, 1861.

In the Photograph He is wearing what appears to be a frock coat. It has a stand up collar which tends to indicate to me a military styling. The coat is made of a ribbed or thinly striped material having almost a cordiroy type of appearence. On the yoke of the jacket these stripes, or ribs, run at 45% angle from the center line of jacket towards the shoulders the stripping runs vertically on the breast and skirt of the coat and horizonally on what appears to be a waistline piece of the garment. The coat has 9 small buttons from the throat to the waistband. And the skirt seems to be trimmed in 1/2 inch black possibly velvet binding. the sleeves are straight cut without cuffs and the material stripping pattern runs the lenght of the sleeve.

A.B. Hutto was sevierly wounded during the war by artillery in the back and left arm, leaving the arm almost useless. the photograph does not indicate any evidence of A.B. Hutto's post war deformity. That would seem to date the photo as being during the war period.

Family stories say that this photo was taken at the time of his enlistment. Yet the coat does not appear to be of any Confederate uniform that I am aware of. The material particular is strange. Yet the coat appears to be of some sort of military design and fairly tight fitted to the body.

Is anyone aware of simular example of uniforms of this type. I believe it to be an academy or possible home guard Uniform.

Can anyone comment on this.
