Re: Who was the 1st South Carolinan Captured?

Yes, I had forgot about the privateering altogether but as soil would go it would have to be Hilton Head Island. The reason why I was asking is that ran across this older man in St. George, SC and he was saying that his grandfather had been captured on Hilton Head Island. Giving him the benefit of the doubt I checked the soldiers CMSR and sure enough J.J. Colson was one of four Confederates who were captured at Hilton Head Island. I also found an entry in the Navy Records of the War of the Rebellion and it listed him by name. And upon doing a little genealogy he was the grandson of that Confederate. I listened to the stories of how J.J. Colson had heard the guns of Sumter and Charleston go off that night in April of 61. It sort of was unreal that an immediate family member was still alive. But the old man still works for a living and is alive and well and living in St. George,SC. What are the odds of the first Confederate being captured on South Carolina soil would also have a grandson alive in 2008? LOL
