The South Carolina in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Dr. Thomas Franklin McDow/SC

I just looked on his diploma that is hanging on my hall wall. It appears he graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1846 but it is hard to read and much of it is in Latin.

A great story involves his treatment of Bernard Buruch's sister for typhoid fever. As a result of his successful treatment, including the novel approach of bathing the patient, he was awarded a silver pitcher by Mr. Buruch at a meeting of the American Medical Association at Baltimore. I gave the pitcher to my son, Thomas F. McDow V as a wedding present on July 11, 1998.
