Military service of Samuel Cordes Boylston

An interesting service account appears in the Florida pension claim of Samuel Cordes Boylston. He was born on 29 April 1844 in Charleston, SC, and filed a soldier's pension claim in Duval County, Florida on 5 August 1909. He enlisted in Charleston on 29 December 1860 in the Corps of Cadets of the South Carolina Military Academy and was honorably discharged in Greensboro, NC on 26 April 1865 with the surrender of Johnston's army. As for his service, he writes, "helped to build 'Star of the West Battery' Morris Island Dec '60; Drill Master Gregg's 1st So Ca Infy; Aide Staff Maj Genl Bonham So Ca Vols; at Mortar Battery siege of Fort Sumter Apr '61; Drill Mr Bacon's 7th So Ca Infy and private Co. 'B' 7th SC Infy battle of Bull Run; Commissioned 2nd Lieut CS Army 8/22/61; 2nd Lt PACS 8/21/1861; 1st Lt CSA 8/25/62; detailed to act Adjt Genl Rhett's Brigade Regulars Sept '63; Stationed Fort Sumter SC from 8/22/61 till 8/22/63; was in nearly every engagement connected with Siege of Charleston; saved the two 11 inch Dahlgren guns from wreck of monitor Keokuk; and was also at Averysboro and Bentonville at battles there."
