This man has an exemplary service file, which you can order here. Larkin Rice enrolled in the "Meeting Street Saludas", Capt. D. C. Tomkins, Aug. 26, 1861, and was present for duty until his regiment surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse VA, Apr. 9, 1865.

The regiment belonged to the legendary South Carolina Brigade commanded by Generals Gregg and McGowan. Here's a site which will allow you to read a summary of the regimental history.

Over the years General Robert E. Lee developed a strong sense of confidence in this brigade. However, during the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, he was astonished to witness this reliable command in full flight.

As some veterans rushed past him, Lee shouted: "My God, General McGowan! Is this splendid brigade of yours running like a flock of geese?"

"General," replied McGowan, "those men are not whipped! They only want a place to form, and they will fight as well as they ever did!"
