Ga units serving on James Island

My son and I have been researching my ggrandfather and his brother, who were both members of Company G of the 23rd Georgia Regiment.
We are interested in the time they spent in service on James Island, South Carolina with the 23rd Georgia.
James T. Kitchens (my ggrandfather) Private-April 7, 1862. Records we copied at the Georgia Archives indicate James T. served on James Island as a teamster in September 1863.
William T. Kitchens (Brother of James T.)- Private- August 31, 1861.
He served as a sub overseer at the Holmes House on James Island in January and February 1864.
We have pay records of extra money he earned in that service ($1.50 per day). Any idea what or where the Holmes House was or what purpose it served?
Any information on these topics would be appreciated.
