Battery Simkins was located near the Holmes' House on the east side of James Island, just south of Fort Johnson. It was one of the batteries overlooking Charleston Harbor on the extreme left of the Confederate western defensive line. (See O.R. Series I, Vol. XIV, p. 685.) As a guess, your ancestor was detailed to oversee slaves who were building/maintaining the work.
