I am curious to know more about what sort of service was rendered by Musicians in the Confederate forces during the Civil War. Two of my ancestors have service records that indicate that they were Musicians. One was very young when he enlisted in 1964 and apparently served as a Musician his entire enlistment. The other enlisted in 1861 as a Private and was "promoted" to Musician. Later he was promoted to Corporal. What exactly did Musicians do besides the obvious? When the going got tough, did they pick up a gun and fight? What did they do whn they were not playing music???
