Hi Rodger,

There is a diary written by P. A. McMichael of the 20th South Carolina that covers this time period during which the 20th SC Infantry was assigned to Kershaw's South Carolina Brigade. The diary is in the Southern Historical Collection at the Wilson Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This diary is referenced in "A History of the 15th South Carolina Infantry: 1861-1865" by James B. Clary (See www.15thscinfantry.com for more information about the 20th South Carolina Infantry). I found this diary to be particularly helpful in understanding parts of the Battle of First Deep Bottom in late July 1864 and portions of the Fall 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. The 20th South Carolina continued to serve in Kershaw's Brigade until the Brigade's surrender as part of Johnston's Army of Tennessee to Sherman in April 1865 at Greensboro, NC.

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Jim Clary
