Re: Wm. E. Walters 2nd S.C. Rifles POW Chaplain

There are a couple of references to Walters in the Confederate Baptist, the weekly newspaper of the South Carolina Baptists during the war, which often published letters from chaplains. I am not aware of any written by Walters himself, but he is mentioned in letters of T. D. Gwin, the chaplain of the 1 S.C. (Hagood's), a regiment in the same brigade as the 2 S. C. Rifles. A letter by Gwin in the 24 Jul 63 issue, p. 1, c. 4-5, mentions that Walters was preparing to baptize two men, and refers to him as a Baptist, in common with Gwin. He is mentioned again by Gwin as praying with two men of the 2 S. C. Rifles who were executed for desertion before the brigade at Petersburg in early September. This reference is in the 23 Sep 63 issue of the Confederate Baptist, p. 2, c. 4-5, which has a long acocunt of the execution. The same incident is mentioned in a letter of William T. Field to his wife Jennie, 11 Sep 63, published by the S. C. UDC in Recollections and Reminiscences, Vol. III, pp. 328-329, in which Field mentions Walters by name. There may be other references to Walters in the Confederate Baptist, but I have not recorded them. The only placews of which I am aware that have that paper are microfilm at South Carolinana Library (which also hold the originals) and at the Greenville County Public Library. Most of the issues are existant for 1863, but there are only scattered issues in 1864.
