I know a friend that is descended from a Confederate politican that was in Richmond before it fell. He said that they knew the war was lost long before the soldiers did. They all went out on the lawn of the Confederate Whitehouse in Richmond and had drinks. Interestingly, Politicians haven't changed either in all these years.
