I have the hand written "Biography of a Confederate Soldier" by J.W. Rice of Bamberg, Barnwell District, South Carolina. He was in the Bamberg Guard unit in the war. He was wounded several times and was hospitalized at Chimborazo Confederate Hospital in Richmond, Va. There was a Doctor Rice serving at the hospital at the time he was a patient. His relative Dr. Rice got in touch with "J.W.'s" father J.A.J. Rice in Bamberg, resulting in his father traveling to Richmond, to retrieve his son for a medical furlough, for a recovery at home in Bamberg.
During the years I spent trying to translate "J.W.'s" beautiful, but hard to read handwriting, I just couldn't believe a Southern Hospital in the South would have a name such as Chimborazo, so I kept trying to put another interpretation on it. But, truth won out.
