Searching for letters, journals, and other personal documents referencing the life and Civil War military service of John Pinckney of Waccamaw, Georgetown County, South Carolina. Born a slave, he enlisted in the 104th U.S. Colored Infantry under the name John Allston (his master was named William Allston). He survived the war, changed his name to that of his father, and died in 1916. At the time of his death, he lived with his grandchildren, John, Frank, Pinkney and Emma Singleton.
