Alfred McCoy

In South Carolina in 1800, all counties were renamed as districts. In 1868, the districts were converted back to counties when South Carolina reentered the Union and the new State Constitution was adopted.

The 1850 United States census listed (Spelled as) Alphus McCoy, born about 1831 and noted his occupation as a farmer and living in the household of John McCoy, born about 1803 and what appears to be his wife Sarah McCoy, born about 1805. Another family household member was Lewis McCoy, born about 1845. The family household was living in Laurens District, South Carolina and the census was enumerated with no date shown.

The 1860 United States census listed Alfred McCoy, born about 1834 in South Carolina and noted his occupation as a farmer with a real estate of $1,100.00 and a personal estate of $600.00 and listed as the head of the household and living with what appears to be his wife (Spelled as) M. (A female) McCoy, born about 1839 in South Carolina. Other family household members were: John McCoy, born about 1859 in South Carolina and noted as seven months old and Lewis McCoy, born about 1847 in South Carolina and (Spelled as) Margt (A female) Levell, born about 1806 in South Carolina. The family household was living in Laurens District, South Carolina and the nearest Post Office was reported as Martins Depot and the census was enumerated on July 26, 1860.

According to the United States Census Mortality Schedules Index, 1850-1880; Sarah McCoy of Laurens District, South Carolina died in September 1860 due to dropsy and was age fifty-two.

The 1870 United States census listed Alfred McCoy, born about 1833 in South Carolina and noted his occupation as a farmer and noted as he could not read nor write and listed as the head of the household and living with what appears to be his wife Margaret McCoy, born about 1844 in South Carolina and also noted she could not read nor write. Other family household members were: John McCoy, born about 1860 in South Carolina and Thomas McCoy, born about 1865 in South Carolina and (Spelled as) Luis (A male) McCoy, born about 1847 in South Carolina. The family household was living in Hunter Township in Laurens County, South Carolina and the census was enumerated on September 7, 1870.

The 1880 United States census listed Alfred McCoy, born about 1833 in South Carolina and noted his occupation as a farmer and listed as the head of the household and living with his wife Margaret S. McCoy, born about 1840 in South Carolina. Other family household member were: John W. McCoy, born about 1860 in South Carolina and Tom L. McCoy, born about 1867 in South Carolina. The family household was living in Hunter Township in Laurens County, South Carolina and the census was enumerated on June 8, 1880.

The 1900 United States census listed Alfred McCoy, born about 1834 in South Carolina and noted his occupation as a farm laborer and noted he could read and write and owned his own home free of mortgage and listed as the head of the household and living with what appears to be his wife Emma McCoy, born about 1855 in South Carolina. Other household members were: (Spelled as) Sallie Johnston, born about 1863 and the sister-in-law of Alfred and William B. Johnston, born about 1896 in South Carolina and the nephew of Alfred. The household was living in Hunter Township in Laurens County, South Carolina and the census was enumerated on June 25, 1900.

The 1910 United States census listed Alfred McCoy, born about 1832 in South Carolina and noted his occupation as a farmer and listed as the head of the household and living with his wife Emma R. McCoy, born about 1854 in South Carolina. Another household member was Robert (Spelled as) Johnson, born about 1898 in South Carolina. The household was living in Hunter Township in Laurens County, South Carolina and the census was enumerated on April 25, 1910.

According to South Carolina Death Records 1821-1965 stated the 2nd wife of Alfred McCoy, Emma McCoy was widowed and died on January 24, 1931 and has a death certificate.

The compiler notes both Albert McCoy and Emma McCoy likely have a Confederate pension at Columbia, South Carolina.

According to the Soldiers and Sailors Database by the National Park Service Private A. M. Corey alternate name A. McCoy of Company F of the 3rd Regiment South Carolina Infantry and noted an overview and the compiler has corrected mistake s and or additional information made with brackets.

“3rd Infantry Regiment, organized at Columbia, South Carolina, in April, 1861, contained men recruited in the counties of Laurens, Colleton, Pickens, Spartanburg, and Newberry. Ordered to Virginia, it saw action at First Manassas in Bonham's Brigade. Later the 3rd was placed in General Kershaw's, Kennedy's, and Conner's Brigade. It participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Gettysburg, [and] then moved to Georgia with Longstreet. After fighting at Chickamauga and Knoxville, it returned to Virginia and continued the conflict at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. Later it was involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and North Carolina Campaign. In April, 1862, this regiment totalled [totaled] 550 effectives. It reported 23 killed, 108 wounded, and 4 missing at Savage’s Station, had 14 killed and 35 wounded of the 371 at Maryland Heights, and lost 11 killed, 71 wounded, and 2 missing of the 266 at Sharpsburg. The unit lost 163 at Fredericksburg, 12 at Chancellorsville, and twenty-one percent of the 406 at Gettysburg. Its last battle was at Bentonville where 1 was killed and 15 were wounded, and on March 23, 1865, there were 191 present for duty. It surrendered on April 26. A Company Muster roll within his Compiled Military Service Records for September and October 1862 stated Private (Spelled as) A. McCoy of Company F of the 3rd Regiment South Carolina Infantry enlisted on July 1, 1862 at Laurens District, South Carolina and enrolled by Colonel Preston for three years and noted as present for duty.

The compiler notes the 3rd Regiment South Carolina Infantry was enrolled April 14, 1861. It was mustered into the Confederate States service on June 6, 1861 and re-organized for the war in May 1862. About April 9, 1865 the 3rd Regiment South Carolina Infantry was consolidated with the 8th Regiment South Carolina Infantry, the 3rd Battalion South Carolina Infantry and a part of Blanchard’s South Carolina Reserves and formed the New 3rd Regiment South Carolina Infantry which was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on May 2, 1865.
