Ervin Brown Brunson Jr. was Captain of the Pee Dee Artillery when he was court-martialed in February 1864 and found guilty of embezzling money entrusted to him for the payment of the men under his command, and for conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman. He was cashiered out of the unit and sent to Purcell's Battery (a Virginia unit of Pegram's Artillery) as a private, until he was discharged on 30 June 1864 at the reluctant request of SC Governor Bonham. Before his sentence was announced, Brunson had been elected to replace his father, E.B. Brunson Sr., as Clerk of Court in Darlington District. Bonham advised that since there was a Confederate law that men elected to such civil posts must be released, Brunson had to be discharged, even though the people of the District likely would not have elected them had they know of his court-martial and sentencing. (Source: Service records of Brunson available at Fold3.com and Charleston Mercury article of 17 March 1864, available at genealogybank.com.)
I have checked at the National Archives in DC but have not been able to find the "lengthy specifications" of the charges against Brunson.
Hope this is helpful to you.
