Thank you very much for that information. The index in volume 15 of the Naval Official Records shows J.F. Carlsen and refers to page 337, yet, on that particular page, his initials are shown as C.F., not J.F. He is shown as being from Captain Wagener's company of artillery. I have suspected that this J.F. Carlsen, who went down in the HUNLEY, is the same J.F. Carlsen who had previously served on the privateer JEFF DAVIS. It is almost certainly so, especially since the JEFF DAVIS, under command of Louis M. Coxetter, also operated out of Charleston, South Carolina.
