Page 100 lists John S(mith) Preston (soon to be CS General) occupation Farmer his real estate is valued at $135,000.00 and personal estate valued at $700.000.00. Wife Caroline M. (Wade Hampton's sister) 5 children the eldest 23 years old listed as a law student. Included in the house hold is 78 year old mother-in-law Mary Hampton (her total worth $170,000.00). Their neighbors are listed 65 young men ages 15 to 18 under the heading Hale Arsenal Cadets. Can anyone give a history of Hale Arsenal?
Next are listed 40 or so young men enrolled at South Carolina College. The faculty includes President Augustas B. Longstreet, Charles Venable Prof of Math, Robert W Barnwell prof of sacred Lit, Joseph LeConte chemestry, Maximillian LeBoode, logic, Wm Rines Greek, James Reynolds Romance Lit.
