Re: 22nd SC in Charleston area?

The Captain Feilden whose report is mentioned in the O.R. excerpt was an interesting character. He was Henry Wemyss Feilden (1838–1921), an Englishman from Lancashire and the son of Sir William Feilden. Feilden was previously an officer in the British 44th (Black Watch) Regiment, and saw service in India and China. He resigned his British Army commission in 1862, and came to the Confederate States through the blockade early the following year. Upon arrival, he applied for a commission in the Confederate Army, and on 23 April 1863 was appointed a captain in the Adjutant General's Department, with date of rank from 23 February 1863. Assigned to the staff of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, he remained there through the end of the war, serving successively under Generals P. G. T. Beauregard, Samuel Jones, and William J. Hardee. On 27 October 1864, he married Julia McCord (1837–1920) of Columbia, SC, in Greenville, SC. On 1 May 1865, he was paroled at Greensboro, NC, as captain and assistant adjutant general on General Hardee’s staff. Following the war, he returned to England with his wife, and was reinstated in the British Army. In 1875–1876, he served as naturalist on the British polar expedition to Smith Sound, and later conducted Arctic explorations on his own account. During the Boer War, he went to South Africa as a paymaster, and in World War I served as a recruiting officer for Sussex. At his death in 1921, Rudyard Kipling said of him, “He was the gentlest, gallantest English Gentlemen who ever walked.”

A bit off topic, but hope it is some interest.
