Yep, also about 250 pounds +/-, Hampton would be a first round draft for linebacker on any NFL team; an excellent horseman of such strength that as a "Hey, watch this!" could squeeze his legs together and make his horse grimace and whine. He was an avid bear-hunter pre-war and is known to have dispatched at least 43 with a bowie-knife and according to an article in "Sports Afield" is the only hunter known among the group who could, after killing one, single-handedly lift a fully grown black bear atop a pack horse. Was struck a killing blow to the back of the head by a yankee cavalryman's sword, turned in rage and chased the terrified trooper from the field. His pistol misfired six times. As governor he received a letter from the trooper sincerely apologizing for his "cowardly act," and begging forgiveness. Hampton freely forgave.
WHAT A MAN!
