Just an example to go with Alan's post, there were only 4 SC Infantry Regts that served in the west for any length of time, the two longest serving were the 10th SC and the 19th SC. The 19th was mostly from Abbeville and Edgefield, now the 10th was from Charleston, Georgetown, Williamsburg, Horry, and Marion. The 10th did have a numebr of wealthy men in its ranks, notably John S. Palmer from Charleston, the son of a Planter. You also have Arthur Manigault as its first Colonel. Now one of interest is Captain Plowden C.J. Weston from Georgetown. Weston would be elected Liet. Governor of the State in 62. He served as Captain of Company A for the first year and a half of the war, he was a very wealthy man, worth over a Millon dollars in 1860, owning over 300 slaves, he had a library that was valued at $30,000. He would die of tuberculosis in January of 64.
