ALLSTON, Benjamin. b. Charleston, SC, 26 Feb 1833. Graduated USMA, 1853. Rice Planter and Episcopal minister at Georgetown and Union, SC. LT, US Cavalry, 1853-1857. LT, CS Artillery, 16 Mar 1861. MAJ, PACS, 20 Jun 1861, and temporarily ordered to 19th MS Infantry. Assigned as MAJ, 5th VA Cavalry, but unit never formed. Assigned to command of 4th AL Infantry, Fall 1861, while E. M. LAW recovered from wound received at Manassas, VA. COL, Adjutant & Inspector General's Corps, May 1862. Staff officer with E. Kirby SMITH and others for rest of war.
