The whereabouts, and activities of this unit--as well as many of the others that were released at Vicksburg in September, has long been a partially unsolved puzzle for me. There were many returned pow unit consolidations and brigade assignments during this period, that I have yet to totally resolve. As part of Gregg's brigade specifically, this unit fades into a fog after late Sept. re-organization and early Oct. transfer to Van Dorn's army near Holly Springs. I think that may be due to the need to hold back 2000 of the pows for a later exchange [11/10/62]. This limbo status may also may be why Gregg was chosen [10/24] to replace Tilghman in charge of the parole camp in Jackson, and it appears that Heiman may then have been the temp. brigade cdr, until his death in early Nov. then the Col of the 41st appears to have been in charge until Gregg re-assigned late Nov. It was not until Chickasaw Bluff in Dec. that Gregg's brigade re-appears, after which they were sent to Port Hudson.
Unit histories, archives, CSR's, records of events--none have clearly indcated conclusively the trail of these units during much of the last quarter of 62. Any bits of information would be appreciated.
