Volney Fleming Willoughby

Though this man was living in Alabama at the beginning of the War, he may like his son have enlisted in a Tennessee unit due to his longtime connection with East Tennessee and particularly Hamilton County.

I have a "lost" ggg-grandfather from Jackson Cty., AL (near Stevenson) named Volney Fleming Willoughby (b.1815 in VA). For several years, I've been looking for a service record or any confirmation of the Confederate unit in which he enlisted. Volney moved from Hamilton County, TN to Jackson County, AL in 1855 and appears in the 1860 census. According to my family information and printed in a book called "A History of Logan County, Arkansas". Volney "enlisted in the Southern Army" sometime in 1862. The story in the book is told by his son, Andrew V. Willoughby, that at age 7 he rode on the back of his father's horse to the point of enlistment and then the 7 year old boy returned home alone and with the horse. Later in the account it is stated that Volney was killed at Chickamauga. In a family letter in 1860, Volney Willoughby is referred to as a "Breckenridge Man", noting his Southern leanings. Volney's oldest son, Monroe Willoughby was a member of the 17th Tennessee Infantry, which included men from Jackson Co., AL. Volney's wife Malinda is listed back in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN in the 1870 census and is listed as a widow.

There is a "V. Willoughby" listed in the 4th Tennessee Infantry (CS) this is a Vincent Willoughby. Malinda Masterson Willoughby appears to have never applied for a widow's pension in Arkansas. She died prior to being eligible.

Any help would be appreciated,

Jim Martin
