I am trying to determine if the William Tipton in the 5th Tennesse Calvary - Mckenzie's was my ancestor. My ancestor orginally served in the 39th Georgia Infantry and was from Gilmer County Georgia. He had lots of family in Eastern Tennesee. He was the Grandson of Major Jonathan Tipton, who was a brother of Colonel John Tipton of Franklin fame. Family tradition states he served in a 5th Tennesee Regiment. Whether it was Calvary or Infantry was not passed down, and with the confusion of Battalions and regiments an merging of units in Tennessee it is difficult to sort out. Anyone have any ideas?
