Re: Confederate Burials At Emory & Henry College

Don, I apparently never replied to your post after your extreme kindness in answering my questions. Here is the information I obtained about J. R. Moffit's Confederate service from the Nat'l Archives. Although I have been unable to obtain proof, I feel certain that the man buried at Emory & Henry College was my ancestor. If you know of any other records pertaining to the soldiers who were buried there, please let me know. Thanks so much for all of the information you provided. Jaime Teas Dilger in Houston, TX

Moffett, J. R.; Moffitt, A.E. Private, Co. B, 35th Tennessee Infantry, Confederate StatesofAmerica . -- Enlisted September 6, 1861 at Camp Smartt byCapt.C. M. Forrest. This company was successively designated asCompany C. Mountain Rifle Regiment Tennessee Volunteers; CaptainForrests's Company and Company B, 5th Tennessee RegimentProvisional Army; and Company B, 25th Regiment TennesseeInfantry. The regiment was organized September 11, 1861, andaccepted into the service of the Confederate States October31,1861. It was known in the field as the 5th TennesseeRegiment Provisional Army and as the Mountain Rifle RegimentTennesseeVolunteers, but was officially designated the 35thRegimentTennessee Infantry by the A. & I. G. O. It wastemporarily consolidated with the 48th (Nixon's) RegimentTennessee Infantry by S. O. No. 3 Hd. Qrs.. Polk's Brigade, dated September 27,1863, until the latter was transferred to48th (Voorhies') Regiment Tennessee Infantry by S. F. O. No. 46Hd. Qrs. Army ofTennessee, dated July 14, 1864, but each companyof the two organizations was mustered separately and under itsoriginal designation during the period covered by thisconsolidation. About April 9, 1865, the 4th, 5th, 19th, 24th,31st, 32nd, 35th,38th, and 41st Regiments Tennessee Infantrywere consolidated and formed the 3d Consolidated RegimentTennessee Infantry which was paroled at Greensboro, N. C., May1, 1865 There is a J. R. Moffitt, Engineer Corps, died March 20, 1864 recorded in the Record of Confederate Dead - EmoryCemetery (located at Emory and Henry College in Washington Co.,VA). (http://www.ehcweb.ehc.edu/emory/confederate.htm) Hismilitary records from NARA say "see also 3 Confed Engr.Troops".His last Muster Roll is for March & April 1864. Couldthis behim buried in Virginia? I just have a funny feeling that it is.3rd Confederate Engineer Troops.
