And read the book about 80 Acres of Hell, "To Die in Chicago: Confederate Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas 1862-1865". When the death camp was closed, passage home by train or ship was offered if they took the Oath of Allegiance. Most of the soldiers chose to walk home.
